4-cylinder replacement engines: prices, engine codes and fitment
How much does a 4-cylinder engine cost?
A replacement 4-cylinder engine from Power Engines runs $1,349 to $4,999, and most of the 4-cylinder assemblies we hold sit between $1,549 and $2,899. Right now there are 107 four-cylinder engines in stock across 1.4L through 2.8L gasoline units plus a 5.2L Isuzu commercial diesel. Price tracks the engine family and how hard that core is to source, not the age of your vehicle: a 2.4L Honda K24 for an early-2000s CR-V is one of the cheapest complete swaps available, while a turbocharged Subaru FA20DIT sits at the top of the range.
Every figure on this page is the engine assembly alone. Freight is quoted separately (see the shipping rates below), and installation labor is billed by whichever shop fits the engine. We do not quote labor, because shop rates vary by region and by how much of your old engine’s hardware is reusable. Get a written labor quote from your installer before ordering so you can compare the full job cost.

Codes are grouped by family. Where a range is shown, the generation and vehicle application set the exact price — for example the Gen 1 G4KH is $1,949 and the Gen 2 G4KH is $2,599. If your code is not listed, it may be sold out or stocked in another cylinder count; check the V6 and 6-cylinder range or ask us directly.
New or remanufactured: what this page actually stocks
Both, and the listing tells you which. Of the 107 four-cylinder engines in stock, 74 are new units and 32 are remanufactured. A remanufactured assembly here is a zero-mile rebuild: the block is machined back to spec and reassembled with new internal wear parts, then tested before it ships. A new unit has never been in service. Neither one is a used pull with unknown mileage, and both carry the same 6-month warranty.
Read the Condition field on the product page before you buy — it is set per SKU. If you want to browse by condition instead of by cylinder count, use new engines or remanufactured engines.
No core charge, ever
You keep your old engine. Power Engines does not hold a core deposit on any four-cylinder assembly, does not require you to crate and return the failed block, and does not bill a non-return fee. That is a real cash difference on a job like this: a core deposit is money you front on top of the engine price and then wait to recover after your shop pulls the old unit, boxes it and ships it back on a pallet.
Scrap it, keep it for parts, or sell it — it is yours. Nothing about the warranty depends on returning it.
What you actually receive
Our four-cylinder engines ship as bare long blocks. You get the assembled block, crank, pistons, rods, heads and valvetrain. External accessories are minimal, and your installer reuses the parts already on your vehicle: intake and exhaust manifolds, sensors, alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump, turbocharger where fitted, flywheel or flexplate, and wiring.
That is deliberate. Reusing your own accessories is what keeps the assembly correct for your exact year, market and trim, and it avoids paying twice for hardware that is already on the car. Plan for gaskets, seals, timing components and fluids as part of the install — those are consumables, not warranty items.
Turbocharged, naturally aspirated, diesel and hybrid
Four-cylinder is a cylinder count, not a specification. Of the 107 in stock, 59 are turbocharged, 8 are diesel and one is a hybrid Atkinson-cycle unit. That distinction decides fitment more often than displacement does.
- Turbocharged gasoline — Hyundai/Kia G4KH and G4FJ, Audi and VW EA888 variants (CAE, CPM, CYF, CYFA, CYN), Ford EcoBoost CAF479/CAF488, Chevrolet 1.4L LE2, Subaru FA20DIT. Browse them all under turbo engines. A turbo block is not interchangeable with the naturally aspirated version of the same displacement.
- Naturally aspirated gasoline — Toyota 2AZ-FE, 3RZ-FE, 1AR-FE and 2TR-FE; Honda K24 series; Hyundai/Kia G4FD, G4NC, G4KC, G4KE, G4KJ; Subaru EJ25; GM 2.5L LCV.
- Diesel — Mitsubishi 4D56T, Toyota 2L-TE, Nissan YD25, Isuzu 4JB1 and 4HK1-TC. See the diesel engine range.
- Hybrid — the Toyota Prius 1.8L 2ZR-FXE, listed under hybrid engines.
If you are still deciding between cylinder counts rather than engine codes, our guide on displacement vs cylinder count covers the trade-offs.
How to confirm the right 4-cylinder fits your vehicle
Displacement alone is not enough, and vehicle name alone is definitely not enough. Multiple different four-cylinder engines share the same displacement inside the same nameplate: a 2.4L Hyundai Sonata can be a G4KC, a G4KE or a G4KJ depending on year and generation, and those are not interchangeable. Work through all five points before ordering:
- Year, make, model and trim. Generation splits often fall mid-model-year.
- Displacement. 1.6L, 2.0L, 2.4L and 2.7L variants can all appear in the same model line.
- Engine code. The definitive identifier. Read it off the block or the emissions label, and match it to the code in the listing title.
- The engine digit in your VIN. Several of our listings call out the exact position, for example “VIN A, 8th digit” or “VIN 1, 5th digit”. Check it against your own VIN.
- Turbo or not, and GDI or MPi. Same displacement, different block. Confirm which one your vehicle left the factory with.
Confirm with us before you order. Send your VIN to our team and we will verify the assembly against your vehicle. Call 877-900-2695, Monday to Friday 8am–5pm ET, or send your vehicle details. Five minutes on the phone is cheaper than freight on the wrong long block.
Freight, warranty and returns

4-cylinder engine questions we get asked
Is a 4-cylinder engine cheaper to replace than a V6?
On our shelf, yes. Four-cylinder assemblies start at $1,349 against $2,499 for the cheapest V6. Freight is the same class of cost either way, and labor depends on the vehicle, not the cylinder count.
Do I have to send my old engine back?
No. There is no core charge on any four-cylinder engine we sell, and no return of the old block is required.
Do I get the turbocharger with a turbo engine?
No. These are bare long blocks. Your installer reuses your original turbocharger, manifolds and sensors, which is also how the assembly stays correct for your specific vehicle.
Two different engines share my displacement. How do I choose?
Go by engine code and the VIN digit named in the listing, not by displacement. Send us the VIN if you are not certain and we will confirm it.
How long is the warranty and what does it cover?
Six months from delivery on internal lubricated parts, with installation required within 30 days by an ASE-certified shop. Cracks are excluded, and covers, seals and gaskets are not warranted.
Can I get a quote that includes delivery to my address?
Yes. Call 877-900-2695 or send us your vehicle details and we will quote the engine plus freight to your exact address.
Not sure which 4-cylinder you need?
Send us your VIN, or your year, make, model and engine size, and we will confirm the correct assembly, the current price and the freight cost to your address before you commit. Request a 4-cylinder engine quote or call 877-900-2695, Monday to Friday 8am–5pm ET. More answers on our customer FAQ.
