How much does a Toyota truck engine cost?

Toyota truck and SUV engines at Power Engines run from $1,849 to $4,999. That covers 7 engine families held at our Hawthorne, New Jersey warehouse. The cheapest listing is the 2.4L 2L-TE turbo diesel at $1,849. The most expensive is the 2011-2020 4Runner 4.0L 1GR-FE Gen 2 at $4,999.

Four-cylinder long blocks sit between $1,849 and $2,899. V6 long blocks run from $2,499 for a 3.4L 5VZ-FE up to $4,999 for a dual VVT-i 4.0L 1GR-FE. Each price is the full price of the engine. Power Engines charges no core deposit on any listing, so there is no second invoice and no refund to chase once your old engine comes out.

Seven of the 20 in-stock listings are new engines and 13 are remanufactured. The condition is stated on every product page and in the table above, so you know which one you are buying before you reach checkout.

22R-E 2.4L four-cylinder for the Toyota Pickup and 4Runner

The 22R-E is the engine people still search for by name, almost forty years after it launched. Power Engines lists two new 22R-E long blocks, both currently out of stock, both rated at 98 HP and both priced at $1,999:

• 1981-1995 Toyota Pickup 2.4L 22R-E, condition New, $1,999
• 1984-1995 Toyota 4Runner 2.4L 22R-E, condition New, $1,999

Two details decide whether a 22R-E listing fits your truck. First, the carbureted 22R and the fuel-injected 22R-E are not the same engine, and a 22R truck needs an injection system to run a 22R-E. Second, the 1985 model year is a changeover year on several body styles. Confirm the engine code stamped on your block and the engine digit in your VIN before ordering.

3RZ-FE 2.7L four-cylinder

The 3RZ-FE is the deepest stock on this page: three remanufactured listings at $2,599 each, all rated at 150 HP.

Toyota used both a 4-port and an 8-port cylinder head on the 3RZ-FE. These listings cover both intake patterns, which is why the port count appears in the product title. Match the port count on your existing head so your intake manifold and gasket set bolt up without modification.

5VZ-FE 3.4L V6

Four remanufactured 5VZ-FE listings, 193 HP. The T100 listing is the lowest-priced V6 on this page.

2TR-FE 2.7L four-cylinder

Three new 2TR-FE listings, 70 units between them. The 2016-2023 Tacoma unit is the dual VVT-i version and is a different engine from the earlier 2TR-FE, so the two are not interchangeable.

1GR-FE 4.0L V6, Gen 1 and Gen 2

The 1GR-FE comes in two versions on this page and they carry different part prices, different outputs and different model-year coverage.

Dual VVT-i changed the cylinder heads, the camshaft timing control and the engine management. A Gen 1 block will not drop into a Gen 2 truck without the matching accessories and harness, and the reverse is also true. If your truck sits on the boundary years, confirm the engine digit in your VIN with our team before ordering.

2L-TE and 1KZ-TE turbo diesel

Two new 2L-TE 2.4L turbo diesel long blocks are in stock at $1,849, rated at 97 HP, listed for the Hilux and the 4Runner. Two units each.

The 3.0L 1KZ-TE listings for the Hilux Surf and the 4Runner are out of stock at $1,949. They are not available to order right now and no restock date has been confirmed. Use this table as a starting point, then confirm the engine code on the block and the engine digit in your VIN. Several of these nameplates were sold with more than one engine in the same model year.

Confirm the engine code before you order

A truck nameplate and a displacement do not identify an engine on their own. The 4Runner alone appears on this page with five different engine codes, and the Tacoma with four. Before you order, check all four of these:

1. Year, make and model, including cab and drivetrain where the listing names them.
2. Displacement, taken from the vehicle rather than from a parts listing.
3. Engine code, stamped on the block or printed on the emissions label.
4. The engine digit in your VIN. Several listings on this page name the exact VIN position to read.

What is in the box

Every engine on this page ships as a bare long block with internal lubricated parts assembled and minimal external accessories. You reuse your own intake and exhaust manifolds, sensors, alternator, starter, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, flywheel or flex plate, and the wiring that goes with them.

Plan for the usual replacement items at install time: gaskets and seals that are not reusable, belts, hoses, fluids and the timing components your shop specifies for the engine family. A 3RZ-FE and a 1GR-FE do not need the same service kit.

Warranty

• 6 months from delivery on every engine on this page.
• Installation must be completed within 30 days of delivery.
• Installation must be done by an ASE-certified shop.
• Coverage is limited to internal lubricated parts.
• Cracks are not covered. Covers, seals and gaskets are not warranted.

Keep the invoice from the installing shop. It is what establishes the install date and the ASE certification if a claim is ever opened.

Orders placed before 2pm EST ship the same day. Freight is quoted by region and delivery type:

Pickup at the Hawthorne, New Jersey warehouse is free, and local delivery is free within 30 miles of it. We do not ship to Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico. Returns are accepted within 30 days, with a 20% restocking fee on an unboxed engine.

New or remanufactured

Both conditions sit on this page and the difference is stated per listing.

• New: 22R-E, 2TR-FE, 2TR-FE Gen 2 and 2L-TE listings. Seven listings in total.
• Remanufactured: 3RZ-FE, 5VZ-FE and both 1GR-FE versions. Thirteen listings in total.

Questions we get on Toyota truck engines

Is a 22R the same as a 22R-E?

No. The 22R is carbureted and the 22R-E is fuel injected. Both listings on this page are 22R-E. Putting a 22R-E into a carbureted truck means adding the fuel injection system to go with it.

Will a 1GR-FE from a 2008 Tacoma fit a 2013 4Runner?

No. The 2008 truck uses the Gen 1 1GR-FE and the 2013 uses the Gen 2 dual VVT-i version. They are listed separately here for that reason.

Does the price include a core deposit?

No. Power Engines does not take a core deposit on any listing, so the price you see is the price you pay for the engine.

Do I have to send my old engine back?

No. With no core charge there is nothing to return and nothing to reclaim.

Does the engine come with the turbo on the diesel listings?

The listings are long blocks. Confirm with our team which external components come attached on a specific diesel listing before you plan the install.

How fast can I get one?

Orders before 2pm EST ship the same day. Transit time after that depends on the freight region in the table above.
