Mitsubishi engine installations cover an unusually wide spectrum. On one end, the iconic 4G63T turbo in Evo and DSM applications has a dedicated enthusiast install scene. On the other, the 4D56 diesel in Pajero / Montero / Triton applications has its own specialist install patterns. In between, the 6G72 V6 in 3000GT / Diamante / Montero, the 4B11T in Evo X, the 4G69 in Outlander / Galant, and modern 4N15 / 4N14 diesels each have their own installation considerations. This guide walks through the general workflow with platform-specific notes.
Before the Engine Arrives
Verify the engine code matches your application. For Evo and DSM 4G63T work, generation matters substantially (1G vs 2G DSM, Evo IV-IX have different long block variations). For 6G72 work, naturally-aspirated vs twin-turbo (3000GT VR-4) generations have different internals. For 4D56 diesel work, generation matters (early 4D56 vs later 4D56T common-rail). For Outlander 4B12 or 6B31, year and trim affect supporting parts.
Order the supporting parts ahead. Timing belt service is critical on 6G72, 6G74, 4G63, 4G69, 4D56. These are interference engines, and the new engine should typically get fresh timing belt, tensioner, water pump, idlers as part of install (on belt-driven applications).
Day-Of Setup
Read the old engine before pulling. Scan the ECU for any active or pending codes. On 4G63T applications, document boost gauge behavior and any knock log readings if a standalone or piggyback is in use. On 4D56 diesel applications, document any glow plug, injector, or EGR codes; these often need attention regardless of swap.
Removal Sequence
Drain coolant (Mitsubishi long-life pink fluid for modern applications, green for older), engine oil, ATF if pulling the transmission with the engine.
Disconnect the battery negative first. For 4G63T applications with aftermarket fuel systems, relieve fuel pressure carefully: high-pressure return-style aftermarket setups need attention beyond OEM procedure.
Remove the intake plumbing. On 4G63T turbo applications, the intercooler piping, BOV, and intake manifold come off. On 4B11T (Evo X), the SST transmission requires its own attention if installed.
Document accessory bracket configuration with photos. Mitsubishi accessory routing varies by year and application.
The Lift
Most Mitsubishi inline-fours weigh 350-450 pounds bare. The 4D56 diesel runs heavier at 450-550 pounds due to iron block and crank. The 6G72 V6 weighs roughly 400-500 pounds. The 6G74 V6 in Montero applications is similar.
Use lifting plates or chains through head bolt holes with appropriate spacing. On 4G63T applications, the turbo hangs off the exhaust side, so either remove it before lifting or balance the lift accordingly.
Installation Specifics
For 4G63T applications: verify oil pump pickup orientation, set new timing belt with crank and cam marks aligned, confirm turbo oil supply and return are clean. The crank position sensor needs careful installation.
For 4B11T (Evo X) applications: the MIVEC system requires correct oil pressure for proper operation. Verify oil filter housing and oil cooler lines are clean.
For 6G72 (3000GT, Diamante, Montero) applications: timing belt installation is critical because this is an interference engine. The DOHC heads (3000GT VR-4, Stealth R/T Turbo) have specific cam timing procedure.
For 4D56 diesel applications: injector return lines, injection pump timing (on mechanical pump variants), glow plug system. The 4D56 common-rail variants need scan tool work for injector coding.
For 4G69 / 4G64 applications: balance shaft and timing chain (on later applications) require attention.
First Start
Pre-oil before crank. Crank with fuel system disabled until oil pressure shows. Restore fuel, start, watch for codes.
For 4G63T applications, monitor for boost leaks, oil leaks at turbo lines, and proper crank position sensor reading.
For 4D56 diesel applications, bleed the fuel system carefully, prime the injection pump per Mitsubishi procedure.
The First 500 Miles
Standard break-in: varied throttle, no extended cruise, no full throttle. For 4G63T and 4B11T turbo applications, no high boost until first oil change. For diesel applications, no extended idle and varied load.
Change oil at 500 miles. Verify no leaks at all gasket surfaces.
Sourcing from a catalog with documented Mitsubishi fitment and engine code coverage keeps the install pipeline predictable.
