Hyundai engine buying guide

How much does a Hyundai engine cost?

Hyundai engines for sale at Power Engines run from $1,495 to $4,299. Price follows the engine code and the generation, not the model name, so two cars with the same badge and the same displacement can take different engines at different prices. Every price below is the engine itself with no core charge, so your old block stays with you and there is no deposit to chase after the swap.

Output figures are the values published on each product page and vary by model year and state of tune. That is 26 listings in stock and 764 units on the shelf as this page was written. Twenty-four of the 26 are new engines. The two 3.3L G6DH V6 listings are remanufactured, and the condition is stated in the specifications on every product page and in the Condition filter above the grid.

Hyundai engine codes in stock

Hyundai names its engine families Gamma, Nu, Theta and Lambda, but the code stamped on the block is what decides fitment. Use the sections below to match your car to a code, then confirm the code against your own engine before you order.

1.6L G4FD Gamma GDI

The G4FD is the naturally aspirated 1.6L Gamma with direct injection, rated at 140 HP on the product pages. It is the cheapest Hyundai engine on this page at $1,495. Do not confuse it with the G4FJ below, which is the turbocharged 1.6L and a different engine.

The same G4FD is used across several Kia models. If you are shopping a Rio, Soul or Forte, start from the Kia engine page instead.

1.6L turbo G4FJ Gamma II T-GDI

The G4FJ is the turbocharged 1.6L Gamma II with direct injection, listed at 177 HP. Five listings cover it, all at $1,545, which makes it the broadest single code on this page. The engine ships as a bare long block, so the turbocharger itself is not included and your shop reuses the original unit.

1.8L G4NB

One listing covers the 1.8L G4NB for the 2011 to 2016 Elantra, at $1,745. This car was also sold with other engines in the same years, so the VIN check matters here more than usual. The product page lists VIN E in the 8th digit.

2.0L G4NH

The 2.0L G4NH is listed at 149 HP and covers the naturally aspirated Elantra, Kona and Veloster from 2017 onward at $2,499. Each product page names the VIN digit, which is the fastest way to separate this engine from the 1.6L turbo sold in the same cars.

2.0L turbo G4KH Theta II GDI, Gen1 and Gen2

The G4KH is the 2.0L turbo Theta II, listed at 245 HP. It comes in two generations that are not interchangeable. Gen1 covers the 2011 to 2014 Sonata and the 2013 to 2016 Santa Fe at $1,949. Gen2 covers the 2015 to 2019 Sonata, the 2017 to 2019 Santa Fe and both N cars at $2,599. The Veloster N and Elantra N use the Gen2 block with a different factory tune, and the output on those product pages is the figure Power Engines lists for the long block, not a factory N rating.

The Gen1 and Gen2 differences, and how to tell them apart on the car, are covered in the G4KH Gen1 versus Gen2 guide.

2.4L G4KJ Theta II GDI, Gen1 and Gen2

The G4KJ is the 2.4L direct injection Theta II at 189 HP, and it is the deepest stock position on this page: six listings and 303 units across the two generations. Gen1 covers 2012 to 2016 cars at $1,949 and Gen2 covers 2015 to 2021 cars at $2,795. The Sonata overlaps in 2015, so the VIN check decides which one you need.

Failure symptoms on this family, including the knocking and oil consumption pattern that sends most owners here, are set out in the Theta II 2.4L failure guide. If you want the Hyundai and Kia Theta engines on one page, use the Theta II collection.

2.4L G4KC Theta

The G4KC is the earlier port injected 2.4L Theta at 165 HP, for the 2006 to 2008 Sonata, at $1,849. It is the oldest engine stocked for Hyundai and the only one on this page from before the GDI era.

3.3L G6DH V6

Two V6 listings cover the 3.3L G6DH at $4,299, for the Azera and the three row Santa Fe. These two are the only remanufactured Hyundai engines in stock. Everything else on this page is new. Output is listed at 294 HP.

Which Hyundai engine do I have?

Year, make, model and displacement are not enough on their own. Hyundai sold the Tucson with a 1.6L turbo, a 2.0L naturally aspirated and a 2.4L in overlapping years, and the Sonata changed from Gen1 to Gen2 Theta II inside the 2015 model year. Work through all four checks before you order.

  1. Read the engine code off the block or the label on the engine itself. Hyundai codes start with G4 for the four cylinders and G6 for the V6.
  2. Check the 8th digit of the VIN. Several listings on this page name the exact digit, which separates engines that share a displacement.
  3. Confirm the displacement and whether the car is turbocharged. The 1.6L G4FD and the 1.6L turbo G4FJ are different engines and do not swap.
  4. Call 877-900-2695 with the VIN and the code before you place the order. Power Engines confirms fitment against the listing.

Fitment is confirmed on the engine code and the VIN, not on the model name. If the code on your block does not match the code in the listing title, do not order the listing.

What arrives when you order

Every engine on this page ships as a bare long block, crated, with zero miles as an assembly. Little or no external hardware comes with it. Some engines arrive with a valve cover, timing cover or oil pan, and those may differ by year and application, so your shop should transfer the original parts wherever they are needed for fitment.

Plan to reuse the intake and exhaust manifolds, sensors, solenoids, wiring, the turbocharger on the G4FJ and G4KH listings, and the accessory drive from your old engine. Budget for new gaskets and seals, since those are not warranted.

No core charge on any Hyundai engine

Power Engines does not hold a core deposit. The price on the listing is the price of the engine. Your old block stays with you, there is nothing to crate and ship back, and there is no deposit to recover weeks later. Most remanufactured engine sellers hold a core deposit on top of the listed price, so compare the total cost rather than the headline number.

Shipping, local delivery and pickup

Orders placed before 2pm EST ship the same day. Freight prices to a business address are fixed by region:

RegionBusiness, no liftgateBusiness with liftgateResidential with liftgate
East Coast and Midwest$295$355$445
West Coast and Mountain$395$455$545

Delivery within 30 miles of the warehouse in New Jersey is free, and pickup at 55 Thomas Rd N, Hawthorne, NJ 07506 is free during business hours, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm EST. Power Engines does not ship directly to Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico, but can deliver to a freight forwarder in the continental United States. Liftgate service is required when the delivery address has no forklift or loading dock.

Warranty

New and remanufactured engines carry a 6 month warranty from the delivery date, signed and time stamped. Two conditions decide whether a claim stands:

  • The engine must be installed within a strict 30 day installation period.
  • Installation must be done by an ASE certified shop, under normal driving conditions.

Coverage is for defects in the internal lubricated parts: pistons, piston pins and rings, crankshaft and main bearings, connecting rods and rod bearings, camshaft bearings, intake and exhaust valves, valve springs, push rods, rocker arms and rocker arm shafts. Sensors, solenoids, covers, seals and gaskets are not warranted. Full terms are on the warranty page.

Returns

Returns run 30 days and need an RMA number before anything ships back. An unopened engine returned because it is no longer needed carries a 20 percent restocking fee, and return freight is deducted from the refund. Cancellations are free by email within 24 hours of purchase. The full terms are in the refund policy.

Common questions

Are these Hyundai engines new or used?

Twenty-four of the 26 listings in stock are new engines with zero miles. The two 3.3L G6DH V6 listings are remanufactured. No engine on this page is a used pull.

Does the price include the turbocharger?

No. The G4FJ and G4KH listings are turbo engines, but they ship as bare long blocks and the turbocharger is not included. Your shop reuses the original unit.

Is there a core charge?

No. There is no core deposit on any engine, new or remanufactured.

How fast does it ship?

Orders placed before 2pm EST ship the same day. Transit time depends on the region and the freight terminal.

My Sonata is a 2015. Which 2.4L do I need?

The 2015 Sonata spans both G4KJ generations, so the 8th VIN digit and the code on the block decide it. Call 877-900-2695 with the VIN before ordering.

Do you have Kia engines too?

Yes. Several of these codes are shared with Kia. The Kia engine page lists them by model.
