How to Replace a Ford Escape (2017–2019) Engine Step by Step Guide

How to Replace a Ford Escape (2017–2019) Engine Step by Step Guide

The Ford Escape from 2017 to 2019 is a versatile compact SUV that offers a balance of comfort, fuel efficiency, and technology. However, like all vehicles, its engine may eventually need replacement due to wear, overheating, or internal failure. Replacing the engine can restore performance and extend the life of your SUV. This step-by-step guide explains the process in detail. At Power Engines, we supply road-legal, OEM-spec replacement engines designed to make this job easier and more reliable.

Preparation and Tools Required

Before beginning, gather the necessary tools: an engine hoist, jack stands, a hydraulic jack, complete metric socket and wrench sets, torque wrench, screwdrivers, pliers, and drain pans. Replacement fluids such as coolant, oil, and transmission fluid will also be needed. Park the Escape on a flat surface, disconnect the battery, and ensure the engine is cool before you begin.

Step 1: Remove the Hood and Drain Fluids

Start by removing the hood for unobstructed access to the engine bay. Drain the coolant, engine oil, and transmission fluid into proper containers. Proper fluid disposal ensures a clean and safe workspace.

Step 2: Disconnect Wiring, Sensors, and Fuel Lines

Label all wiring harnesses, sensors, and vacuum hoses connected to the engine. Relieve pressure in the fuel system, then disconnect the fuel lines. Taking photos of connections can simplify reassembly later.

Step 3: Remove Accessories and Cooling System

Detach the alternator, starter motor, A/C compressor, and power steering pump. If possible, secure the A/C and steering components aside without disconnecting fluid lines. Remove the radiator, fans, and hoses to allow space for the engine to be lifted out.

Step 4: Disconnect Exhaust and Transmission

Unbolt the exhaust manifold from the engine. Support the transmission with a jack, then remove the bolts securing the transmission to the engine block. For automatic Escape models, disconnect the torque converter bolts before separation.

Step 5: Unbolt Motor Mounts and Remove the Engine

Unbolt the engine mounts on both sides. Attach the engine to a hoist at secure lifting points and carefully lift it from the bay. Double-check that all hoses, wiring, and lines are disconnected before extraction.

Step 6: Prepare the Replacement Engine

Transfer components from the old engine to the new one, including intake and exhaust manifolds, sensors, and brackets. Replace gaskets, belts, and seals to ensure long-term reliability. At Power Engines, our Ford Escape-compatible engines are built to OEM specifications, ensuring emissions compliance and smooth installation.

Step 7: Install the New Engine

Lower the replacement engine into the bay with the hoist, aligning it with the motor mounts and transmission. Torque bolts to manufacturer specifications. Reconnect the transmission, exhaust, and accessory components.

Step 8: Reconnect Wiring, Fuel, and Cooling Systems

Reinstall all wiring harnesses, sensors, and fuel lines. Refit the radiator, cooling fans, and hoses. Refill the engine with new oil, coolant, and transmission fluid.

Step 9: Test and Break-In

Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition to ON to prime the fuel system. Start the engine and allow it to idle, monitoring for leaks, dashboard warnings, or unusual noises. Let it reach normal operating temperature. For the first 500 miles, avoid high RPMs and heavy loads. Change the oil after the break-in period for optimal engine life.

Replacing the engine in a Ford Escape (2017–2019) requires preparation and attention to detail, but the results can extend the lifespan of your SUV and restore its performance. By following these steps and sourcing a reliable, road-legal replacement engine from Power Engines, you can ensure your Escape runs smoothly for many more miles.
