Toyota 22R-E, 3RZ-FE and 5VZ-FE: The Classic Toyota Truck Engine Guide

Few engines have a reputation like Toyota's old truck four-cylinders and V6s. The 22R-E, 3RZ-FE and 5VZ-FE are the reason 300,000-mile Toyota pickups are still working trucks and not museum pieces. But when one finally lets go, most owners hit the same wall: three engine families, overlapping model years, and part numbers that look almost identical. This guide sorts that out.

The three engines, in plain English

2.4L 22R-E (1981-1995)

The 22R-E is the fuel-injected version of the legendary 22R. It is an 8-valve SOHC four-cylinder with a timing chain, cast-iron block and roughly 112-116 hp depending on year. Nobody buys one for power. People buy them because they idle forever, tolerate neglect, and can be rebuilt with hand tools. You will find it in the Toyota Pickup (1981-1995) and the first two generations of 4Runner (1984-1995).

2.7L 3RZ-FE (1994-2004)

The 3RZ-FE replaced the 22R-E and is a genuinely modern engine by comparison: 16-valve DOHC, roughly 150 hp, still with a timing chain. It powered the 1994-2003 4Runner and the 1995-2004 Tacoma, plus the T100 and early Tundra. One critical detail when shopping: early and late 3RZ-FE heads differ in intake port count (the well-known 4-port vs. 8-port intake difference). Match your intake manifold to the head, or you will be buying a manifold too.

3.4L 5VZ-FE (1995-2004)

The 5VZ-FE is the 24-valve V6 that gave the 3rd-gen 4Runner and V6 Tacoma about 183-190 hp. It is a belt-driven engine, not chain-driven, which is the single most important maintenance difference versus the four-cylinders. The timing belt interval matters, and so does the water pump that lives behind it.

What actually fails on each one

  • 22R-E: timing chain guide wear (a rattle on cold start, and in bad cases the chain saws into the timing cover and dumps coolant into the oil), head gasket failure after overheating, and worn valve guides that smoke on startup.
  • 3RZ-FE: head gasket failure between cylinders after chronic overheating, cracked exhaust manifolds, and knock-sensor wiring failures. Bottom ends usually outlast the rest of the truck.
  • 5VZ-FE: timing belt neglect, water pump leaks, and the classic rear main / oil pump seal weeping. Overheating from a failed pump is what usually kills them.

The pattern is the same across all three: these engines rarely die of old age. They die of one cooling-system event or one skipped timing service.

Rebuild or replace?

On a 22R-E or 3RZ-FE, a machine shop rebuild is realistic if the block is not cracked, but by the time you pay for machine work, a gasket kit, bearings, valve work and reassembly labor, a complete replacement long block is usually competitive and far faster. On the 5VZ-FE, a V6 rebuild almost always costs more than a replacement engine.

The other factor is downtime. A rebuild ties up your truck for weeks. A crated long block arrives ready to swap over your accessories. If the truck is your work vehicle, that difference is worth real money.

Which engine fits your truck

Years Model Engine Notes
1981-1995 Toyota Pickup 2.4L 22R-E Long block - EFI, timing chain
1984-1995 Toyota 4Runner 2.4L 22R-E Long block - 1st/2nd gen
1994-2003 Toyota 4Runner 2.7L 3RZ-FE 4 and 8 port intake versions
1997-2004 Toyota Tacoma 2.7L 3RZ-FE 4 and 8 port intake versions
1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner 3.4L 5VZ-FE V6 long block - timing belt
1996-2004 Toyota Tacoma 3.4L 5VZ-FE V6 long block - timing belt

Always confirm the engine code stamped on your block and the 8th digit of your VIN before ordering. Model year alone is not enough on these trucks, because Toyota overlapped engine families during transition years.

Before you order: five things to check

  1. Engine code, not just year. Read it off the block or decode your VIN.
  2. Intake port count if you are buying a 3RZ-FE.
  3. Accessories. Our engines ship as bare long blocks, so plan to move over your intake manifold, exhaust manifold, alternator, power steering pump, sensors and covers.
  4. Cooling system. Replace the radiator, thermostat, hoses and water pump at the same time. The old engine died for a reason.
  5. Installer. Warranty coverage requires an ASE-certified shop and installation within 30 days of delivery.

FAQ

Is a 22R-E the same as a 22R?

Mechanically they are close relatives, but the 22R-E is electronically fuel injected while the 22R is carbureted. The intake, wiring and fuel system are different, so you cannot treat them as a drop-in pair without also swapping the supporting hardware.

Can I put a 3RZ-FE in a truck that came with a 22R-E?

People do it, but it is a conversion, not a replacement: engine mounts, wiring harness, ECU, exhaust and driveshaft considerations all come into play. If you simply want the truck running again, replacing like for like is far cheaper.

How many miles should I expect from a replacement?

All three families are capable of very high mileage when the cooling system is healthy and oil changes are on schedule. The engine is rarely the limiting factor; maintenance is.

Do these engines come with the timing belt or chain installed?

They are supplied as long blocks. Covers, seals and gaskets are not warranted items, and external accessories generally are not included, so budget for a fresh timing service kit and a new water pump on the 5VZ-FE.

Which one is the most reliable?

The 3RZ-FE is arguably the sweet spot: modern enough to make usable power, chain-driven so there is no belt interval, and simple enough to live a long time. The 22R-E wins on pure simplicity, and the 5VZ-FE wins on power if you keep up with the belt.

Ready to replace it?

If your 22R-E, 3RZ-FE or 5VZ-FE is knocking, smoking or full of coolant, a complete long block is the fastest way to put the truck back to work. Every engine we sell is a bare long block covered by a written 6-month warranty from the date of delivery, and it has to be installed within 30 days by an ASE-certified shop for that coverage to stay valid. We ship by freight from our Hawthorne, New Jersey warehouse to the lower 48, with liftgate and residential options at checkout, or you can pick up locally. Not sure which engine code you need? Call us at 877-900-2695 (Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm ET) or use Find Your Engine and we will match it to your VIN.
