If you drive a 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Tacoma or Tundra from the mid-2000s onward, there is a good chance there is a 4.0-liter 1GR-FE under the hood. It is one of Toyota's most durable V6s, and it is also one of the easiest engines to order incorrectly, because Toyota made a significant mid-life change that split the family into two generations that do not swap cleanly.
Gen 1 vs. Gen 2: the difference that matters
The original 1GR-FE (roughly 2003-2009 in US trucks and SUVs) uses VVT-i on the intake camshafts only and makes about 236-239 hp. Starting around the 2010 model year, Toyota released the updated Dual VVT-i version, which adds variable timing on the exhaust side, raises compression, and lifts output to roughly 270 hp with better torque down low.
The two share a displacement and a name, and very little else from an installation standpoint. The Dual VVT-i engine has different cylinder heads, different cam timing hardware, a different intake, and different engine management expectations. Putting a Gen 2 into a Gen 1 truck is an engine-management project, not a swap. When you order, the model year of your vehicle decides which generation you need.
Quick way to tell them apart
- Model year: 2003-2009 trucks are Gen 1; 2010 and newer are almost always Gen 2 Dual VVT-i.
- Valve covers: the Dual VVT-i engine carries cam phasers on both cams, so the exhaust side has a phaser at the front of each head.
- VIN: decode the 8th digit and confirm before you buy. This is the only method we consider reliable.
What goes wrong with the 1GR-FE
Timing chain and secondary air injection
The 1GR-FE is chain-driven, so there is no belt interval, but high-mileage engines can develop chain guide wear that shows up as a cold-start rattle. On 2010+ Tundra and Sequoia, the secondary air injection system is a well-known headache. It is not an internal engine failure, but it does throw codes that get blamed on the engine.
Oil consumption and cooling
These engines are not big oil burners by nature, but a neglected PCV system or long oil-change intervals will change that. The bigger risk is a cooling event: a failed water pump or radiator (particularly the transmission-cooler-in-radiator design on some models) can lead to a head gasket failure or worse.
Head gaskets after overheating
Like most aluminum-head V6s, the 1GR-FE will survive a lot of abuse but not sustained overheating. Once you have warped a head or lost a head gasket, the economics tip quickly toward a complete long block rather than machine work on both heads.
Repair, rebuild, or replace
A single failed sensor or a leaking water pump is a repair, full stop. A rebuild makes sense only when the block and heads are known-good and you already have the truck apart. Once you are looking at bearing damage, a spun rod, coolant in the oil, or metal in the pan, a complete replacement long block usually wins on both cost and turnaround, because a V6 rebuild means machine work on two heads plus the block.

Our 1GR-FE engines ship as bare long blocks. You will move over your intake, exhaust manifolds, accessories, sensors and covers, so inspect them while the engine is out. Replace the thermostat, water pump, radiator and hoses as a set, prime the oil system before the first start, and follow a proper break-in. Warranty coverage runs 6 months from delivery and requires installation by an ASE-certified shop within 30 days.

Will a Gen 2 Dual VVT-i engine fit my 2007 4Runner?
Not as a straight swap. The Dual VVT-i engine expects different engine management and cam control hardware. For a 2007 truck, order the Gen 1 engine.
Is the 1GR-FE an interference engine?
Yes, in the sense that valve-to-piston clearance is tight, which is another reason chain guide wear should never be ignored.
Does the Tacoma 4.0L use the same engine as the 4Runner?
Within the same generation, the core long block is the same family, but accessory brackets, oil pans and sensor locations can differ by application. Order by your specific model and year rather than by displacement.
How long does a 1GR-FE last?
Well-maintained examples routinely pass 250,000 miles. The engines that fail early are almost always the ones that overheated or went too long between oil changes.
What comes in the crate?
A complete long block. Covers, seals and gaskets are not warranted items and external accessories are generally not included, so plan on reusing your originals.
