Honda K24 Engine Guide: CR-V, Element and Accord (K24A1, K24Z1, K24A RAA, Earth Dreams K24W)

Honda's K24 is one of the best four-cylinder engines ever put in a mainstream car. It is also one of the easiest to order wrong, because Honda used the K24 name across a decade of CR-Vs, Elements and Accords with different heads, different cam profiles, different intakes and, in the Earth Dreams era, direct injection. If you are shopping for a replacement, the suffix after K24 matters more than the displacement.

The K24 variants you will actually run into

K24A1 (2002-2006 CR-V)

The workhorse. Roughly 160 hp, i-VTEC on the intake cam only, port injection, and a reputation for going 250,000 miles when it is fed oil. This is the version that made the K24 famous with anyone who has ever kept a second-generation CR-V running.

K24Z1 (2007-2009 CR-V)

The third-generation CR-V engine. Similar architecture, revised intake manifold and head, around 166 hp. Not interchangeable with the K24A1 without also swapping supporting parts, so match your model year exactly.

K24A RAA (2003-2007 Accord, 2007-2011 Element)

The Accord and Element share this family. Same basic block, different accessory layout and calibration between applications. The Element in particular has a devoted following, and replacement engines are the main reason so many are still on the road.

Earth Dreams K24W / K24W1 / K24W9 (2013-2017 Accord, 2015-2019 CR-V)

This is the big break. The Earth Dreams K24W is direct injected, has a completely different fuel system, higher compression, and different cam control. It is a K24 by name only when it comes to parts compatibility. Do not order an Earth Dreams engine for a port-injected car or vice versa.

What fails on the K24

  • Oil consumption on high-mileage examples. Usually rings or valve stem seals. Check the level between changes; a K24 that runs dry will spin a rod bearing like any other engine.
  • VTC actuator rattle on cold start. A one to two second grinding rattle at startup is the classic symptom. It is repairable and not fatal, but it should be diagnosed.
  • Timing chain tensioner wear. Chain-driven means no belt interval, but tensioners do wear.
  • Head gasket after overheating. Same story as every aluminum-head Honda: the engine is tough until the cooling system fails.
  • Carbon build-up on Earth Dreams K24W. Direct injection means no fuel washing the intake valves, so carbon accumulates. Walnut blasting is maintenance, not a defect.

Repair or replace?

A rattling VTC actuator or a leaking valve cover gasket is a repair. Heavy oil consumption with good compression can sometimes be lived with. But once you hear a rod knock, find metal in the oil, or discover coolant in the crankcase, replacement is the sensible route. On a car that is otherwise sound, a long block costs a fraction of a replacement vehicle and takes a competent shop a day or two.

Which K24 fits your Honda

Years Model Engine code Long block
2002-2006 Honda CR-V K24A1 View engine
2007-2009 Honda CR-V K24Z1 View engine
2003-2007 Honda Accord K24A RAA View engine
2007-2011 Honda Element K24A RAA View engine
2013-2017 Honda Accord K24W1 / K24W9 (Earth Dreams) View engine
2015-2019 Honda CR-V K24W (Earth Dreams) View engine

Confirm the code stamped on your block before ordering. The 2012 model year on the Accord and 2014 on the CR-V sit right on the port-injection to Earth Dreams boundary, and that is where most ordering mistakes happen.

Installation notes

K24 engines ship as bare long blocks, so your intake manifold, exhaust manifold, alternator, A/C compressor, sensors and covers move across. While the engine is out, replace the water pump, thermostat and any brittle coolant hoses, and inspect the motor mounts. Coverage is 6 months from delivery, installation must be done by an ASE-certified shop within 30 days, and the engine should be primed and broken in properly before it sees full load.

FAQ

Can I put a K24A1 in a 2008 CR-V?

Not without changes. The K24Z1 in the 2007-2009 CR-V uses a different intake and calibration. For a straight replacement, match the model year.

Is the Element engine the same as the Accord engine?

They come from the same K24A family, but accessory brackets, oil pan and calibration differ by application. Order for your specific vehicle.

What causes the K24 cold-start rattle?

Most commonly a worn VTC actuator, sometimes a tired chain tensioner. It is not an immediate engine-killer, but ignoring it for years is how chains and guides get destroyed.

Do Earth Dreams K24W engines really need walnut blasting?

Direct-injected engines accumulate intake valve carbon over time. Cleaning is normal preventative maintenance on this generation, not a sign of a defective engine.

Are these engines new or remanufactured?

We list both new and remanufactured options depending on the application. Whichever you buy, it ships as a bare long block with a written 6-month warranty.

Ready to replace it?

If your K24 is knocking, burning oil or full of coolant, a complete long block is the fastest path back to a car that was otherwise worth keeping. Every engine we sell is a bare long block covered by a written 6-month warranty from the date of delivery, and it has to be installed within 30 days by an ASE-certified shop for that coverage to stay valid. We ship by freight from our Hawthorne, New Jersey warehouse to the lower 48, with liftgate and residential options at checkout, or you can pick up locally. Not sure which engine code you need? Call us at 877-900-2695 (Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm ET) or use Find Your Engine and we will match it to your VIN.
