If you own a Ford Escape or Fusion from the last decade, there is a good chance you have an EcoBoost four-cylinder under the hood, and a good chance you are not certain which one. Ford offered both a 1.5-liter and a 2.0-liter turbo four in overlapping years, and the engines are not related closely enough to share parts. Getting this right before you order matters more than any other decision in the process.
The two engines
1.5L EcoBoost (CAF479WQ0)
The 1.5 is the economy-focused option, roughly 179-181 hp, turbocharged and direct injected, with an integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head. It appears in the 2014-2020 Fusion and the 2017-2019 Escape. That integrated manifold design is efficient and compact, and it is also central to the engine's most discussed weakness.
2.0L EcoBoost (CAF488WQ5)
The 2.0 is the performance option at roughly 240-245 hp, used in the 2017-2019 Escape, the 2017-2020 Fusion, and the 2017-2020 front-wheel-drive Lincoln MKZ. It shares the family's turbocharging and direct injection approach, with a different block, head and cooling architecture.
Coolant intrusion: the failure everyone talks about
Both of these engines have been associated with coolant intrusion into the cylinders, where a crack or a sealing failure lets coolant reach the combustion chamber. It is the defining EcoBoost complaint, and it is worth understanding because the symptoms are easy to dismiss early.
What it looks like
- Coolant level dropping with no visible external leak and no puddle under the car.
- White smoke or steam from the exhaust, especially after the car has been sitting.
- Misfire codes on one specific cylinder that come back after new plugs and coils.
- Overheating that appears intermittently rather than steadily.
- A sweet smell from the exhaust or coolant residue on a removed spark plug.
Why it turns into a replacement engine
Coolant in a cylinder does two things: it steam-cleans the cylinder wall of oil, accelerating bore and ring wear, and it can hydrolock the engine if enough collects while parked. Once the bore is scored or a rod has bent, you are past the repair stage. Owners who catch it early sometimes get away with sealing work; owners who drive on it for months usually do not.
Other things that fail on EcoBoost fours
- Turbocharger oil feed problems from extended oil intervals. Blue smoke and a whistle or grind from the turbo are the tells.
- Carbon build-up on the intake valves, standard for direct injection, causing rough idle and misfires.
- Timing belt-in-oil systems on some Ford applications, which require strict oil-change discipline. Debris from a degrading belt can clog the oil pickup.
- Head gasket failure after overheating, the usual endpoint of any ignored cooling problem.

The Ford engine code is usually visible on a tag or stamped on the block, and the VIN will confirm displacement. If your Escape or Fusion is a 2017-2019 model, both engines were available, so do not order on model year alone.
Doing the job once
- Find the root cause. If coolant intrusion killed the first engine, pressure-test the cooling system and inspect the radiator, cap and hoses before the new one goes in.
- Flush everything. Coolant that has been mixing with combustion gases is contaminated. Replace it, along with the thermostat and water pump.
- Inspect the turbo. If it fed oil into the intake, clean the charge piping and intercooler before start-up.

Coverage has varied by engine, model year and market. Check your VIN with Ford before spending money out of pocket, since these programs change over time.
Can I just replace the head instead of the engine?
Sometimes, if the cylinder bores are undamaged and the failure was caught early. If a cylinder has been steam-cleaned by coolant or the engine hydrolocked, a complete long block is the reliable answer.
Does the replacement include the turbocharger?
