Pulling a Scion engine borrows heavily from Toyota practice because the engines are mostly Toyota engines. The chassis-specific considerations vary by Scion model — tC and xB have one approach, the FR-S has a different one because of its longitudinal boxer engine architecture. Treating these as identical projects is how shops end up surprised.
Here's the prep-and-removal sequence.
Before You Start
Have ready: clean workbench, zip-top bags and sharpie, engine stand rated for at least 1,000 pounds with correct adapter, engine hoist with load leveler, transmission jack, drain pans, rags, good lighting.
Tools specific to Scion work: Toyota-pattern Torx and JIS bit kits, 8mm and 10mm flex-head ratchets, harmonic balancer holding tool, Toyota-capable scan tool.
Step 1: Photograph Everything
Fifty photos minimum. Vacuum line routing, every connector orientation, accessory belt routing, ground straps.
For FR-S applications, photograph the longitudinal-engine layout carefully — the routing is different from the transverse-engine Scions.
Step 2: Drain Fluids
Coolant first. Engine oil second. For FR-S applications, the boxer engine has specific drain procedures worth checking against the service procedure.
Step 3: Battery and Fuel
Negative terminal first. Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting fuel lines. Cap or plug fuel lines immediately.
Step 4: Remove Accessories
Air intake assembly, engine cover, serpentine belt with routing marked, alternator, A/C compressor tied back without disconnecting refrigerant lines, power steering pump (on applications with hydraulic steering), exhaust manifold or downpipe after overnight penetrating oil soaking.
Step 5: Wiring Harness
Photos pay off here. Work through every connector. Toyota-pattern connector locks. Label everything.
For FA20 / FR-S applications, the harness has both Toyota and Subaru characteristics due to the joint engineering.
Step 6: Cooling and Subframe
For transverse Scion applications (tC, xB), the engine and transmission typically come out as an assembly through the bottom. Subframe drops with the assembly.
For FR-S applications, the longitudinal engine can come out from above with the transmission staying in place on most configurations.
Step 7: Separate the Transmission (if applicable)
For FR-S applications with the engine coming out the top, mark torque converter to flexplate, remove converter bolts through the bell housing access hole, support transmission with jack stand before unbolting.
Step 8: The Lift
Attach engine hoist chains to factory lift points. Load leveler in use. Lift slowly.
Step 9: Mount on Stand
Mount the engine on the stand. All four bolts. Inventory transferring parts.
Prep Tips for the Install
Lay parts in install order. Replace every wear item you can. For 2AZ-FE applications, verify the head bolt issue has been addressed on the replacement engine.
