Step-by-Step Mercedes Engine Removal and Preparation Tips

Pulling a Mercedes engine isn't intrinsically harder than pulling an engine from any other manufacturer, but it's less forgiving of shortcuts. The engine bays are tight (particularly on AMG and SUV applications), the wiring is dense, the Mercedes-specific connector designs require specific handling, and the cost of damaged components is substantial. A home garage Mercedes engine pull is achievable for experienced techs with the right tools and patience.

Here's the prep-and-removal sequence experienced Mercedes specialists use.

Before You Start

Have ready: clean workbench, zip-top bags and sharpie, engine stand rated for at least 1,000 pounds (1,500+ for AMG V8 and diesel applications) with correct adapter, engine hoist with load leveler and rated chains, transmission jack, drain pans, rags, good lighting.

Tools specific to Mercedes work: Mercedes-specific Torx and triple-square bit kits, Mercedes-specific timing tool kits, Mercedes-capable scan tool (XENTRY/Star Diagnostic or equivalent), harmonic balancer holding tool.

For AMG applications, additional tool requirements may apply for AMG-specific fasteners.

Step 1: Photograph Everything

Walk around the engine bay with a phone camera. A hundred photos minimum on Mercedes — the engine bays are dense and the routing of components is Mercedes-specific.

For AMG applications, photograph the cooling system carefully — AMG cooling routing is more complex than non-AMG applications.

For OM642 diesel applications, photograph the complete fuel system, EGR system, and emissions equipment routing.

Step 2: Drain Fluids

Coolant first. Mercedes cooling systems are pressurized through the expansion tank. Use Mercedes-specified MB 325.0 or equivalent coolant for refill.

Engine oil second.

For OM642 diesel applications, drain fuel from the fuel filter housing.

Step 3: Battery and Fuel

Negative terminal first. Mercedes battery locations vary — some applications have trunk-mounted batteries, others under-hood.

Relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting fuel lines. For direct-injection applications, the HPFP holds pressure substantially longer than port-injection engines.

For OM642 diesel applications, follow diesel-specific high-pressure system handling procedures.

Step 4: Remove Accessories

Work top-down. Air intake assembly off. Engine cover off (Mercedes engine covers often have hidden retaining clips). Serpentine belt off, routing marked. Alternator unbolted.

A/C compressor unbolted and tied back. Power steering pump unbolted and tied back (on applications with hydraulic steering).

Exhaust manifolds off, after generous penetrating oil soaking overnight.

For twin-turbo applications (M157, M278, M177), the turbo plumbing comes off in a specific order.

Step 5: Wiring Harness

Photos pay off. Work through every connector. Mercedes connector locks use Mercedes-pattern designs.

Label every connector. The cam position sensors, the high-pressure fuel pump connector, the various coolant sensors, on turbo applications the boost-related connectors, and on diesel applications the injector connectors all need careful documentation.

The main engine harness routes through a firewall bulkhead. Mercedes bulkhead connectors are particularly sensitive to pin damage.

Step 6: Cooling and Subframe

Remove radiator hoses, heater hoses, auxiliary cooling lines. AMG applications have more complex cooling than non-AMG.

Step 7: Separate the Transmission

For automatic transmission applications (most Mercedes), mark the torque converter to the flexplate before unbolting. Remove the converter bolts through the bell housing access hole.

Support the transmission with a jack stand or transmission jack before unbolting the bell housing.

Step 8: The Lift

Attach engine hoist chains to Mercedes-specified lift points. Use a load leveler.

For AMG applications, the lift requires extra attention due to the carbon fiber and aluminum components.

Step 9: Mount on Stand

Mount the engine on the stand. All four bolts. Inventory transferring parts.

Prep Tips for the Install

Lay parts in install order. Replace every wear item you can. For Mercedes specifically, address platform-specific known issues during the prep if the replacement engine doesn't already have them addressed.
