The break-in period on a fresh Mercedes engine matters more for long-term reliability than on most platforms. Mercedes engines are precision-built even at factory spec, and the tight tolerances that make them excellent street and luxury performance engines also make them less forgiving of improper break-in. A Mercedes that gets the first 500 miles right runs decades. A Mercedes that gets the first 500 miles wrong burns oil for its entire service life.

What Break-In Is Actually Doing
A fresh Mercedes engine has manufacturing tolerances at factory or rebuild specifications. Cylinder walls have a specific honing pattern. Rings haven't seated. Bearings haven't found their long-term clearance. Valves haven't wear-mated to seats. On twin-turbo Mercedes engines (M157, M278, M177), turbo bearings haven't completed initial seating.
For AMG applications, the break-in window is when the precision-built internals find their long-term relationships.
The First 30 Minutes
The most important window of the entire break-in period. Idle for two to three minutes to confirm oil pressure, then drive.
Sustained idling is one of the worst things you can do to a fresh Mercedes. Get the vehicle on the road within five minutes. Varied speeds in the 25–55 mph range.
For Mercedes turbocharged applications, the first 30 minutes principle applies specifically to boost — avoid full boost during the first cycle.
The First 50 Miles
Keep the engine working but stay out of the upper third of the RPM range.
For M272 V6, below about 4,500 RPM. For M156 V8 AMG, below about 5,000 RPM. For M157/M278 twin-turbo V8, below about 4,500 RPM and avoid sustained boost. For M177 V8 AMG, below about 4,500 RPM. For OM642 V6 diesel, below about 2,800 RPM with no heavy load.
The First 500 Miles
Full break-in window extends to 500 miles. By 200 miles, brief higher-RPM excursions are fine. By 400 miles, moderately spirited driving. By 500 miles, normal operation.
For AMG applications, avoid track use during the entire 500-mile window. AMG engines are precision-built and benefit from the full window before being asked to deliver AMG-level performance.
For OM642 diesel, avoid sustained heavy towing during the 500-mile window.
Check oil weekly during the break-in period.
The Critical First Oil Change
The most important maintenance event in the engine's life. Oil change at 500–1,000 miles pulls out break-in debris.
Use Mercedes-specified oil. MB 229.5 or MB 229.51 for most modern gasoline applications. MB 229.52 for some diesel applications. Don't substitute generic oils.
Cut the old filter open and inspect. Small residue expected. Larger chips warrant investigation.
Cooling System Care
Confirm coolant level after first 30 minutes, after first day, at first oil change. Use Mercedes-specified MB 325.0 or equivalent coolant.
Listening During Break-In
For M156 AMG applications, listen specifically for any sound that suggests head gasket or head bolt issues — even on reman with addressed head bolts, the seating period is when issues would be most likely to surface.
For twin-turbo applications, listen for unusual turbo-related sounds during boost operation.
For OM642 diesel, listen for swirl flap motor operation (if not deleted) and unusual injector chatter outside normal pattern.

The 500-Mile Checkup
Schedule a return at 500 miles. First oil change, torque verification, scan for stored codes with Mercedes-specific scan tool, fluid check.
