Mercedes-Benz engine specifications follow Mercedes conventions. The codes carry real information, the variants matter substantially within each family, and the differences between similar-sounding engines (M272 versus M276, M156 versus M157) determine fitment outcomes in ways that aren't always obvious to people coming from American or Japanese platforms.

How Mercedes Names Its Engines

Mercedes engine codes use a consistent pattern. The letter prefix identifies engine type: M for gasoline, OM for diesel ("Ottomotor" gasoline, "Olmotor" diesel in German). The three-digit number identifies the engine family.

Common gasoline families: M104 (1990s inline-six), M112 (early-2000s V6), M113 (early-2000s V8 including M113K supercharged AMG), M119 (1990s V8), M156 (AMG naturally-aspirated V8), M157 (AMG twin-turbo V8), M177 (current AMG V8), M178 (AMG V8 specific variant), M256 (current inline-six), M272 (modern V6), M273 (modern V8), M276 (current V6 successor), M278 (twin-turbo V8 non-AMG).

Common diesel families: OM642 (V6 diesel), OM651 (four-cylinder diesel), OM656 (current inline-six diesel).

Variant suffixes identify specific configurations. AMG variants use the same engine family code with specific suffix designations.

Reading Your VIN

The seventeenth digit of the Mercedes VIN identifies the engine code position. Mercedes's VIN decoder confirms the factory-correct engine variant.

Casting Numbers

The engine identification stamp on most Mercedes engines is on the front of the block near the timing cover or on the bell housing flange. Casting numbers identify the production variant.

What Compatibility Actually Means

Same four compatibility checks as any other manufacturer: physical fitment, driveline compatibility, electrical and ECU compatibility, emissions compatibility.

For Mercedes specifically, the trap is the AMG versus non-AMG distinction within the same engine family. An M157 from an E63 AMG is not the same as an M278 from a non-AMG E550, even though both are twin-turbo V8 Mercedes engines.

First: confusing AMG variants with non-AMG counterparts. AMG M157 and non-AMG M278 are different engines with different supporting equipment.

Second: ignoring M272 production year revisions. The M272 had multiple production revisions over its 2004-2014 life with subtle internal differences.

Third: confusing European-spec engines with US-spec equivalents. Same engine family, different emissions equipment, different ECU calibration.
