Scion engines, being mostly Toyota engines, generally inherit Toyota's reputation for durability. Within the Scion lineup, however, some engines have aged substantially better than others. The honest ranking starts with which engines have the cleanest service track records.
1. The 2ZR-FE 1.8L (Scion xD)
The 2ZR-FE 1.8L four-cylinder in the Scion xD (and a wide range of other Toyota applications) is one of the quietest reliability stories in the entire Scion lineup. Cast iron lined aluminum block, dual VVT-i, conventional port fueling. The engine routinely runs past 200,000–250,000 miles with consistent maintenance.
What goes wrong: standard wear items — water pump, thermostat, valve cover gasket, occasional sensor failures. None of those are engine-killers.
Supply: reasonable through Toyota-specialist channels.
2. The 2AZ-FE with Addressed Head Bolts
The 2AZ-FE 2.4L in tC and xB second-generation applications is mechanically excellent provided the head bolt issue has been addressed. A 2AZ-FE with proper thread inserts or block updates from a reputable rebuilder is one of the more durable mid-displacement Toyota four-cylinders in the catalog.
Supply: strong reman availability when sourced from suppliers that address the head bolt issue in the rebuild scope.
3. The 1NR-FE 1.3L (Scion iQ)
The 1NR-FE 1.3L four-cylinder in the Scion iQ is a small but durable engine. Simple architecture, conventional port fueling, no chronic platform failures.
Supply: limited due to the iQ's low production volume, but adequate for current service needs.
4. The FA20 / 4U-GSE (FR-S) Post-Recall
The FA20 boxer engine in 2013-2016 Scion FR-S applications has aged into reasonable reliability for vehicles that received the valve spring recall service and have proper PCV maintenance. Late-production FA20 engines (2015-2016) have fewer documented issues than early production (2013).
Supply: reasonable through Subaru-specialist channels (which is the right path for FA20 work, even on Scion applications).
5. The 1AZ-FE with Diligent Maintenance History
The 1AZ-FE 2.0L in xB first-generation and xA applications is mechanically excellent when maintained properly. The sludging issue is maintenance-related rather than design-related.
For 1AZ-FE sourcing, donor maintenance history matters substantially.
What to Approach With Caution
2AZ-FE applications without addressed head bolts. A reman 2AZ-FE that didn't address this is shipping the same future failure pattern.
Early-production FA20 (2013-2014) without the valve spring recall service completed.
1AZ-FE from undocumented donor sources with potential sludging history.
The Sourcing Picture
The Scion engines on our catalog are matched by engine code and platform fitment, with platform-specific issue verification (2AZ-FE head bolts, FA20 valve springs) disclosed in the rebuild scope.
