Mercedes-Benz has produced engines spanning the full range from impressively durable to platform-defining failures. The badge alone doesn't predict reliability — the specific engine family does. The variation between Mercedes engine families is substantial enough that an honest reliability conversation has to start with engine codes.

Here's the honest 2026 ranking.

1. The M104 Inline-Six (1990s)

The M104 naturally-aspirated inline-six in 1990s W124, W210, and earlier E-class and S-class applications is quietly one of the most durable Mercedes engines ever produced. Cast iron block, aluminum head, dual overhead cam, conventional fueling. These engines routinely run past 300,000 miles with consistent maintenance.

What goes wrong: cooling system aging, wiring harness deterioration (the famous M104 biodegradable wiring harness issue), valve cover gasket leaks. None of those are engine-killers.

Supply: limited as the platform ages, but specialist sources remain available.

2. The M119 V8 (1990s)

The M119 V8 in 1990s S-class, SL-class, and E-class applications is the V8 counterpart to the M104 — mechanically excellent and naturally aspirated. Service-friendly architecture and durable bottom end.

3. The M112 V6 and M113 V8 (Naturally Aspirated)

The M112 V6 and M113 V8 families (early 2000s production) are the modern Mercedes equivalents of the M104/M119 — robust, naturally aspirated, single overhead cam architecture. Service-friendly and durable.

The M113K supercharged AMG variant has its own performance reputation but the naturally-aspirated M112 and M113 are particularly reliable.

4. The OM642 V6 Diesel (With Swirl Flaps Addressed)

The OM642 V6 diesel is mechanically excellent provided the swirl flap issue has been addressed (preventive flap delete where legal, or motor replacement before flaps drop into cylinders). With that issue managed, the OM642 routinely runs past 200,000–250,000 miles.

Supply: reasonable through diesel-specialist channels.

5. The M272 V6 (With Idler Gear Addressed)

The M272 V6 in 2004-2014 production C-class, E-class, ML, R-class, and other applications is mechanically excellent provided the timing chain idler gear has been addressed. Reman engines with addressed idler gear deliver substantial long-term service.

What to Approach With Caution

M156 V8 AMG without addressed head bolts. The original-spec head bolts are documented to fail and a reman that didn't address this is shipping the same future problem.

M272 applications with original-issue idler gears.

OM642 with original swirl flap motor and no preventive delete or motor replacement.

Early-production M157 and M278 twin-turbo applications with extensive accumulated wear and unaddressed turbocharger issues.

European-import engines without verified emissions compatibility.
