Scion performance builds center heavily on the FR-S platform. The tC, xB, and xD have their own smaller performance scenes, but the FR-S/BRZ/86 community is among the most active import performance scenes in 2026 with substantial aftermarket support and well-documented build paths.

Why a Fresh Block Matters More on FR-S Builds

The FA20 is a precision-built engine that responds well to performance work but is also less forgiving of accumulated wear than larger displacement engines. Bearing clearances, ring seating, and valvetrain condition all matter substantially when the engine is asked to produce more than the factory designed for.

A fresh block eliminates the variables. Whatever you build on top has predictable behavior.

The FR-S/FA20 Performance Path

The FA20 has two main performance paths: naturally aspirated cam-and-tune builds (reaching 220-240 horsepower on appropriate work) and forced induction conversions (supercharger or turbocharger kits reaching 350-500+ horsepower).

Supercharger kits for FA20 from companies like Edelbrock, HKS, and other specialty suppliers deliver consistent 350-400 horsepower with appropriate fueling and tune work.

Turbo kits for FA20 reach 400-500+ horsepower territory with substantial supporting work.

The 2JZ swap is a category of its own. Dropping a Toyota Supra 2JZ engine into the FR-S chassis is a major project but a popular one in the FR-S community. Builds reach 600-1000+ horsepower with documented supporting work.

The tC and xB Performance Path

The 2AZ-FE platform supports modest performance builds. Naturally aspirated bolt-on work reaches 170-185 horsepower from the stock 161. Turbo kits exist for tC applications and reach 250-300+ horsepower with appropriate work.

Supporting Components

Performance Scion builds fail more often from supporting systems than engine internals. Cooling, transmission (especially clutch upgrades), fueling, and driveline all need attention beyond modest power increases.

The Cost Reality

A serious FR-S build with fresh crate engine, supercharger, supporting fueling and cooling, and tune typically runs $15,000-$30,000 all-in. The 2JZ swap is a $25,000-$50,000+ project depending on power target.
