Honda's J-series V6 is one of the smoothest engines in its class, and the J35Z2 version is the one you will find in the 2008-2012 Accord, the Crosstour, and the 2013-2015 Acura RDX. It makes roughly 271 hp, it sounds great, and it has a specific weakness that generates most of the replacement demand we see: Variable Cylinder Management.
What VCM actually does, and why it causes trouble
VCM shuts down cylinders under light load to save fuel. On paper it is clever. In practice, running three or four cylinders cold while the rest work has three side effects that owners feel:
- Oil consumption. Deactivated cylinders run cool and their rings can carbon up, letting oil past. A quart every 1,000-2,000 miles is a common complaint.
- Fouled plugs and misfires. Oil in the combustion chamber fouls the plugs in the deactivated bank first, usually the rear bank, which is the harder one to service.
- Vibration and motor mount failure. The transition in and out of VCM shakes the engine, and the active hydraulic front mount often fails, which owners feel as a shudder at cruising speed.
Symptoms that mean the engine, not just a sensor
- Consistent oil loss with no external leak, especially on highway miles.
- Repeated misfire codes on rear-bank cylinders after new plugs.
- Blue smoke on startup or under deceleration.
- A low-oil warning between services, followed by a ticking or knocking noise.
- Coolant loss with no visible leak, a sign of head gasket trouble after an overheat.
The first three are fixable. Once you get to number four with an audible knock, the bottom end has usually taken damage and a complete engine becomes the honest recommendation.
Do not forget the timing belt
The J35Z2 is a belt-driven interference engine. If the belt breaks, valves meet pistons and the repair bill jumps from a maintenance item to a full engine. The belt, tensioner and water pump should be treated as one service. If you buy a replacement long block, do the timing service with fresh parts while the engine is on the stand. It is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.
Repair, or replace the long block?
Plugs, a front motor mount, or a VCM management device are repairs. A ring job on a V6 is not: it means pulling both heads, both banks of pistons, and machine work, at which point a replacement long block is usually cheaper and dramatically faster. If the engine has been run low on oil and knocks, replacement is the only reliable answer.

Should I disable VCM after installing a new engine?
Many owners fit a device that keeps the engine in all-cylinder mode, and the reasoning is straightforward: less deactivation means less oil past the rings and less mount-shaking. It is a choice you and your installer should make together, and it can affect fuel economy slightly.
Is the J35Z2 an interference engine?
Yes. A broken timing belt causes internal damage, which is why the belt service is non-negotiable.
Will an Accord engine work in an RDX?
