Why a Fresh Block Matters More on BMW Performance Builds
BMW engines are tighter-tolerance than most platforms even at factory specification. The engineering refinement that makes them excellent street engines also makes them less forgiving of accumulated wear than American or Japanese performance starting points. A used N54 with 80,000 miles has measurable wear that's invisible at stock power and becomes catastrophic at 600+ horsepower.
Bearing clearances. Ring seating. Cylinder wall finish. Valve guide wear. All of those are at factory spec on a fresh engine and at "working" spec on a used one. The difference doesn't matter at 300 horsepower. It matters substantially at 600.

The S55 is the M3/M4 F-chassis platform. Built S55 engines reach 600–800+ horsepower with substantial supporting work. The S55 is more recent than the N54 and the aftermarket continues to develop.
The S65 V8 in E90/E92/E93 M3 applications is a different category. The naturally-aspirated S65 doesn't respond to bolt-on work the way turbocharged BMW engines do. Turbocharger conversions on S65 platforms exist but are less common and more involved than supercharger paths.
Supporting Components
BMW performance builds fail more often from supporting systems than from the engine itself.
Cooling: more horsepower equals more heat. BMW factory cooling is sized for factory power. Performance builds need upgraded radiators, upgraded oil coolers, and on serious builds external auxiliary cooling.

Sourcing the Foundation
